But Ben Affleck was somewhere nearby, looking at us with envy. And in the small South American city where we found ourselves, he embarked upon his plan.
He would "just show up" at a restaurant where Ariana and I were having dinner, all handshakes and hugs and hellos.
He "just happened" to be at a party we were attending, charming everyone with his witty small talk.
He was "in the neighborhood" and dropped by with a bottle of wine, curious to see how we were doing.
Gradually he created distance between Ariana and me, which he filled with himself. And eventually, he won her heart.
The news of their engagement arrived with an invitation to their wedding.
It was printed on a large piece of vellum, surrounded by temporary tattoos. The recipients were encouraged to wear them at the ceremony and reception to follow.
